If you used to follow someone on Twitter but have stopped doing that because you are tired of reading about what they had for breakfast, or tweeting that they’re giving their dog a bath, or other ridiculous stuff, you will love this one… it is a new social-knowledge site called TipDrop.
Basically TipDrop is similar to Twitter in many ways but it is much better than it. Here is a list of a few TipDrop features…
- Focus – unlike Twitter which lacks focus, TipDrop allows you to give tips on a certain subject which is one of your tip sheets.
- Interactive – other people going to your tip sheet can add their tips or vote for or against your tips.
- Less chance of spam – since other TipDrop users can either vote for or against your tips, tips getting lower votes drop their ranks – when a tip falls below a credibility score of 1, it disappears off the list.
- More characters allowed – unlike Twitter, you can enter a tip for up to 255 characters long.
- More control – the creator of a certain tip sheet can delete tips they feel are inappropriate.
- Showing your links – Unlike Twitter, TipDrop encourages you to have links on your TipDrop page
- Free signup – TipDrop site is supported and monetized with AdSense ads. The nice thing is, if you supply your AdSense Publisher ID in the user settings TipDrop with share 75% of all ad impressions and clicks from your account pages and tip sheets credited to your own AdSense account.
I think TipDrop will do well and will eventually surpass Twitter if the latter does not take drastic changes.
Check out the first tip sheet I created with TipDrop: how to get your computer run faster on it I proposed a drastic way to speed up your computer.

This weekend I tried to install Windows XP inside Ubuntu 9.04 via VirtualBox on an old computer but was troubled by a serious of GRUB booting errors. First, it was the “Grub loading stage1.5 Read error”. After tweaking the BOIS settings, I could get away with the stage1.5 error but was plagued with other disk reading errors.
Initially I thought it was the 100GB hard disk as I did not have any problem when I changed to another HD (8 GB) and installed Ubuntu and VirtualBox. After googling the internet for solutions, I found that I could solve the problem without taking the hard route of BOIS upgrading, which was recommended by most people. This was what I did and it is pretty simple:
I got into the BOIS settings during a cold boot and simply load the default settings and made the following tweaks for the hard disk settings:
- PIO Mode: manually set to the mode which is detected and displayed in BOIS
- DMA Mode: manually set to MWDMA2 as implied by what was detected
- S.M.A.R.T: [Disabled]
- 32Bit Data Transfer: [Disabled]
Another factor that might add to the problem was that I tried initially to create a home partition and made /home as the mounting point on it when Ubuntu starts. Because of the disk problems, I ended it up forsaking this approach and install Ubuntu the normal way – taking over the entire hard disk so that Ubuntu is running on one partition.
Lastly, to make sure the Ubuntu Live CD was created properly from the .ISO image file downloaded, I chose to use the LOWEST speed, rather than the default maximum speed, to burn it onto a DVD disc.
That’s it! Hope this helps those who have the similar problems and who do not want to go through the pain of upgrading BOIS

Product: Blogger’s Paycheck
If you have not even set up one online blog for yourself because you think it is hard to do, you are wrong. It is much easier than you thought. If you know me, you will know that I am fan of using WordPress to create websites, beside using it to set up blogs. It is so easy to do. Blogs – it seems like just about everyone has one.
If you don’t know what a blog is, it comes from the phrase “web log”, which is an online diary or journal of sorts. People have all kinds of reasons for starting a blog. They may do it for fun, because they love writing or just to have an outlet to express their thoughts, vent frustrations and more.
But you can make a blog into a money-making business, even if you have no blogging or business experience.
How to Get Started
You can actually start your blog completely for free. There are services like Blogger.com and WordPress.com that make it super easy. But note, John Yeo, profitable blog and creator of the Blogger’s Paycheck recommends that those seeking profit should use WordPress, but in a different way than that is explained at WordPress.com and he goes through it in detail in the course. Since I was introduced to Ubuntu – desktop edition of the Linux operating system – I have become a fan. I use it all the time and everyday! Once I fully get used to it, I can fully depend upon it for all my daily work – checking email, surfing, posting forum entries, building or editing my websites, etc. Basically there is nothing I cannot do with Ubuntu for things I did in the past with Windows.
However, I do find I need to use Windows occasionally for the following reasons…
- When I want to check the websites I build in Ubuntu with the Firefox browser – I need to see how they look in Internet Explorer (IE) of Windows. Since IE is still the most used browser over the internet, I have to make sure my websites do not look ugly in IE.
- When I need to review a Windows software program.
- When I need to use the BlackBerry Device Software (only available for Windows) to syn with my BlackBerry Pearl – I can view/add/delete pictures, videos and audios to/on my BlackBerry without any problem – I just have difficulty synchronizing with it and adding mobile applicaitons to it.
- When I need to use a Windows application that I purchased in the past – things you paid with your hard-earned money are hard to let go.
Beside above reasons, we do use Windows on daily basis at work as we use Simply Accounting which happens to be a Windows program we have to use for our business
So what do we do? Read the rest of this entry »
