"Honey, I Found That Missing Link!"

Site maintenance can be tricky! You've had a good web page template that allows you to add or update contents easily. Good! Not much more work to do? Wrong?

Consider this question: What bothers you the most when you surf the internet?

  • Boring writing style?
  • Page loads too slow?
  • Content not up to date or not much content at all?
Well, I do not know abut you. What bothers me the most is the "file not found" error, or sometimes called "404 error" or "broken link". You've found a good reference to a page in your favorite search engine and you click on the link, only to find that the page is not there. Hmmm...

What if this happens to your site? What impressions do your visitors have about your site when a "file not found" error occurs on your site?

As a webmaster myself, I have been very careful when I add links to my web pages. I use copy and paste most of the times and I check each link with my browser before I add it. But I was shocked after I installed Adrian Ling's easyClick404 script on my site. The first day I installed and run it (I set it to send an email notification to my testing email address at Yahoo whenever a broken link is detected), I almost got my Yahoo inbox crammed full to the limit of its quota! How can it be? Many reasons:
  1. I removed (on purpose or accidentally) certain files but forgot to remove the links that point to them.
  2. I changed the extension names of certain files from .html to .shtml, or .rm to .ram, etc. but forgot to update the links to these files; even after I updated these links on my site, I had no way to modify the links others have on their sites.
  3. Many other sites link to my site with typos in URL, e.g. specialoffers.html was wrongly used as specialoffer.html (without the "s") or specialoffers.htm (wrong extension), etc.
  4. People most likely make more typos when they enter the URL of my certain page directly into their browsers.
And when these things happen, you have no way to know which link has the problem other than relying on your visitors reporting to you -- so embarrassing! And they would most likely leave your site right away rather than taking the effort to report to you :-(

The nice thing about the script is that it not only detects the missing links, it also smartly redirects to the correct ones! It also works with your custom 404 page (usually named 404.shtml) if no match is found.

No need to rely on your site visitors to report broken links anymore. You will literally have a robot on your site that faithfully does the job! It will even report WHEN the search engine spiders crawled your site and WHICH links they tried to index but missed the mark! Learn more about easyClick404...
